Frequently Asked

Ironshield FAQs

Who is Ironshield?

We are a tight, credit-specialist team of practitioners and problem-solvers. We celebrate curiosity, tenacity and relentlessness. Analysts, PMs and partners debate daily, challenge each other, and promote decision-making and leadership. That hands-on culture keeps us focused and nimble yet thorough.

What does the strategies aim to do?

We aim to generate risk-adjusted returns by exploiting mispricings. Our approach is rooted in value investing, with a focus on compounding returns over time, while also seeking to capture additional upside optionality when idiosyncratic or macro developments create dispersion and opportunities on both the long and short side. We seek situations where the downside can be assessed rigorously and where the range of outcomes offers an attractive asymmetry in favour of investors.

What is Ironshield’s investment philosophy?

Our philosophy is downside-first, catalyst-led and valuation-disciplined. We focus on situations where detailed credit work, legal analysis and recovery assessment can provide an informational advantage. We do not rely on broad market direction to drive outcomes; instead, we seek to identify credits where the risk/reward is shaped primarily by issuer-specific events and where probability-weighted outcomes justify capital deployment. We screen hundreds of credits, probe every angle and keep returning to positions until the legal, valuation and catalyst work is airtight. Relentlessness is a habit here and only stop once we’ve answered the hard questions.

How do you analyse investments?

Our work is forensic and scenario-based. We assess business quality, liquidity runway, capital structure, covenant and documentation terms, creditor dynamics, recovery value and the likely path of a transaction or restructuring. We build probability-weighted outcome frameworks rather than relying on a single base case, and we test investments against a range of operating, legal and market scenarios before capital is committed. We look at a very large number of credits, built on disciplined, repeatable forensic work: rapid screening, immediate legal triage and probability-weighted scenario modelling that lets us conclude quickly and move capital where it matters.

How are opportunities sourced?

Opportunities are sourced through a combination of proprietary research, continuous market surveillance and long-standing relationships across the credit ecosystem, including brokers, dealers, legal advisers, restructuring practitioners, insolvency professionals and other market counterparties. This network supports early identification of dislocated or less efficiently covered credits, particularly in mid-cap and more complex situations.

Who do you trade with?

We trade on secondary markets only, buying existing credit through brokers executed via Bloomberg. That approach gives us optionality and (relative) liquidity in complex credits. We do not originate or lend directly.

What types of instruments do you invest in?

Subject to the relevant mandate, we may invest across the corporate capital structure, including bonds, syndicated loans, privately negotiated credit instruments, claims and related securities. Derivatives may also be used, where permitted, for hedging or efficient portfolio management. Instrument selection is driven by where we believe the most attractive risk-adjusted value sits within the capital structure, informed by legal position, recovery dynamics and liquidity considerations.

What is your investment process?

Our process is bottom-up and catalyst-led: sourcing, screening, detailed diligence, scenario analysis, portfolio review, Investment Committee approval, execution, and active monitoring. Material investments are supported by written analysis and reviewed through formal governance channels. Positions are monitored continuously against thesis, documentation, catalyst progression, valuation and downside parameters, with predefined triggers for escalation, hedging, resizing or exit where appropriate.

How do you manage downside risk?

Risk management is embedded throughout the investment lifecycle. Position sizing is driven by tolerated loss, expected recovery and liquidity, rather than by arbitrary target weights. We apply issuer, sector and portfolio construction limits; conduct scenario and stress testing; review legal and documentation risks; monitor counterparty exposure; and maintain liquidity planning at both position and portfolio level. Governance frameworks are designed to support timely intervention if the risk/reward changes.

How is liquidity managed?

Liquidity is assessed at position level and managed at portfolio level. We consider market depth, trading mechanics, expected exit timelines and the likely behaviour of liquidity under stressed conditions. Portfolio construction is aligned to the liquidity profile of the relevant vehicle, and liquidity management may include cash buffers, staged deployment, phased realisation and disciplined sizing to reduce the risk of forced selling in adverse markets.

How is the portfolio constructed?

We run a high-conviction but controlled approach to portfolio construction. Position sizes reflect downside, recovery confidence, catalyst visibility, liquidity and correlation to the rest of the book. We seek diversification across issuers, sectors, jurisdictions, catalyst types and timelines, while retaining the flexibility to express conviction where the asymmetry is strongest. Portfolio exposures are assessed not only on a stand-alone basis but also in terms of aggregate factor and scenario sensitivity.

How does the strategy behave across different market environments?

The strategy is designed to operate across cycles by focusing on issuer-specific dislocations rather than relying solely on spread compression or broad beta. Periods of volatility can create attractive entry points, particularly where forced selling, refinancing pressure or legal complexity leads to mispricing. Conversely, in more stable markets, the strategy may benefit from event progression, restructuring resolution or re-rating of credits where value has been underestimated. Outcomes will vary by portfolio positioning and market conditions, and cannot be guaranteed.

How is ESG considered?

We view ESG, and especially governance, as relevant to credit underwriting and downside protection. Governance quality, stakeholder behaviour, legal conduct, regulatory exposure and reputational risk may all affect recovery outcomes and transaction risk. Where appropriate and subject to mandate, we can also support investor-specific requirements through reporting or account structuring. ESG considerations form part of the broader analytical framework, but do not override the fund documentation or stated investment objective.

What differentiates Ironshield from other credit managers?

We believe our edge lies in the combination of specialist credit expertise, legal and documentation depth, restructuring fluency, agility in less-covered segments of the market, and high-touch institutional client engagement. We focus on credits where detailed work can materially improve decision-making and where flexibility, speed and structure matter. Our aim is not simply to own credit risk, but to underwrite specific situations where active analysis and disciplined execution can create a more attractive outcome profile.

What reporting and investor communication do you provide?

We provide institutional investors with a high standard of ongoing communication, which may include regular commentary, portfolio and market updates, investor calls, case studies and, where appropriate, additional diligence materials. Subject to confidentiality, operational constraints and vehicle terms, we may also support requests for more detailed reporting, such as attribution, stress analysis, holdings transparency or other institutional information requirements.

How can investors obtain further information or begin diligence?

Professional and institutional investors may contact Investor Relations to request the appropriate materials for diligence, including strategy information, operational documents, policy summaries and, where relevant, vehicle-specific documentation. Any such materials are shared subject to applicable eligibility, confidentiality and distribution requirements.
